چکیده
Verification and historical perspective are presented on the gyrokinetic particle simulations that discovered the device size scaling of turbulent transport and indentified the geometry model as the source of the long-standing disagreement between gyrokinetic particle and continuum simulations.

Progress of Full- f Gyrokinetic Simulation Toward Reactor Relevant Numerical Experiments∗)
Fullf gyrokinetic simulations compute both turbulent transport and profile formations under fixed power, momentum, and particle input as in experiments. This approach has the capability of dictating plasma profiles, provided that time scale of the simulation is long enough to establish power, momentum, and particle balance conditions. Recent Peta-scale supercomputers made such long time scale s...
متن کاملSize scaling of turbulent transport in magnetically confined plasmas.
Transport scaling with respect to device size in magnetically confined plasmas is critically examined for electrostatic ion-temperature-gradient turbulence using global gyrokinetic particle simulations. It is found, by varying device size normalized by ion gyroradius while keeping other dimensionless plasma parameters fixed, that fluctuation scale length is microscopic in the presence of zonal ...
متن کاملRegulation of Turbulent Transport in Neoclassically Optimized Helical Configurations with Radial Electric Fields
Gyrokinetic Vlasov simulations of the ion temperature gradient turbulence demonstrate reduction of the turbulent transport with enhanced zonal-flow generation in the neoclassically optimized helical configuration as predicted by the theoretical analysis of the zonal-flow response. The inward-shifted plasma of the Large Helical Device, thus, has better confinement than that with the standard mag...
متن کاملMechanisms for ITB Formation and Control in Alcator C-Mod Identified through Gyrokinetic Simulations of TEM Turbulence
Internal particle and thermal energy transport barriers are produced in Alcator C-Mod with off-axis ICRF heating, with core densities exceeding 10 21 m −3 , without core fueling, and with little change in the temperature profile. Applying on-axis ICRF heating controls the core density gradient and rate of rise. The present study employs linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of trapped el...
متن کاملSize Scaling and Nondiffusive Features of Electron Heat Transport in Multi-Scale Turbulence
We report recent results from global gyrokinetic particle simulations of the collisionless trapped electron mode (CTEM) turbulence, turbulent momentum transport, and turbulent transport in the reverse shear toroidal plasmas. The study of CTEM turbulence shows that the presence of mesoscale structures drives a nondiffusive component in the electron heat flux due to the weak nonlinear detuning of...
